Should information be anonymous?

It is recommended that the monitoring information you gather is anonymised.  It should be separated from the other details held on file about that individual.  People should be able to return forms completely anonymously.

You may want to think about:

  • Asking people to fill the form in and put it in a separate box, rather than handing it to a staff member
  • Issuing forms with a freepost envelope.

All of the guidance on equalities monitoring states that guaranteeing anonymity greatly increases completion of monitoring forms.  But in some cases, people may need support to fill the form in.  Make sure support is available if people need it – both from your organisation and an independent advice organisation too.
