Developing the right culture

Really embedding equalities and overcoming discrimination relies on culture change.  It is important to recognise that such culture change across an organisation or partnership can take time, and requires different behaviours and actions, as well as different attitudes and values being developed – often by a large number of people.

But it is also important to recognise the contribution of individuals and services to the equalities agenda.  Through our personal behaviours and attitudes it is possible to promote equalities, and change other people’s attitudes and approaches.  Community learning and development has a significant contribution to make because it places such a strong emphasis on developing skills, confidence and resources often within disadvantaged communities.
