What is a needs assessment?

A needs assessment is a process which allows you and others to gather evidence on local needs, assess it, and make changes to your activities as a result.  A needs assessment will help you address the following questions:

  • What are the important equalities issues in the local area?
  • How well are particular groups involved in existing CLD provision?
  • What are the strengths of the current provision, in terms of different equalities groups?
  • What are the barriers people from equalities groups might experience in finding out about or accessing existing and future CLD provision? 
  • Are there gaps in existing provision or could it be improved?

Everyone should have the opportunity to use CLD services in their communities, and CLD providers should meet legal and best practice standards on equalities.  For this to happen it is essential to understand which individuals and groups within communities are using services and identify gaps or inequalities."
